Why Kids and Michigan Winters are Perfect Together

Remember how exciting that first snow of the season was when you were a kid?
If you grew up in Michigan, those inaugural flakes meant that outdoor fun was just a few inches away. It might not fill you with the same giddiness as it once did, but there are lots of simple ways to relive a bit of your childhood once the snow flies.
If you have kids of your own, make memories they’ll remember for a lifetime by bundling up and enjoying our eight favorite free and low-cost ways to make the most of a blustery winter day.
- Stop and catch the snowflakes. Even if there’s no accumulation, there’s always time to savor those first flakes.
- Build a snow fort. Find an empty plastic bucket or box to form your building blocks, then construct your icy fortress. Freeform piling works just as well!
- Make snow angels. Lay back and let your wings take shape.
- Shovel your way to fun. You can look at shoveling as a tedious chore or as an excuse to play in the snow – your choice. Kids love to help and it’s a great way to get everyone moving.
- Skate away. Find a frozen pond or community rink and glide your worries away.
- Sled it. Spend an afternoon at your local sledding hill for hours of fun.
- Warm up. Okay, technically this doesn’t involve snow, but there’s nothing better than a mug of steaming hot cocoa with marshmallows after cold weather fun.
- Create snow friends. Fashion a snow person for everyone in your household. Bonus points for most creative decorations.
