Silk pillowcases and other silk accessories such as wraps, scarves and bonnets have become increasingly popular for their benefits for hair and skin. These silk head accessories have been a cornerstone of Black hair experiences to protect natural and braided hairstyles long before they were more widely adopted as a healthy hair technique. Now the use of silk material has become more popular regardless of hair type.
Here are the benefits of silk pillowcases and wraps:

Damages hair less

We inevitably move around while sleeping, but the right pillowcase can help mitigate the damage this can cause to our hair. Since silk is so tightly woven, it creates a frictionless surface for our hair, allowing for it to glide as we move. When your hair moves on a surface with friction, it can damage the cuticles of your hair and create more breakage, so sleeping on a frictionless surface like silk can help reduce unwanted damage.

Helps keep hair and skin moisturized

As you sleep, silk helps you maintain more moisture in your hair and skin. Silk absorbs less moisture than other materials, helping your skin and hair stay more hydrated. Not only does it help maintain natural moisture, silk can also help with absorption of hair and skin care products. Since silk does not sop up your products, it promotes retention of products applied to the hair and face. This leaves more of the active ingredients available for their intended use on hair or skin.

Prevents frizz and tangles

Silk is beneficial for all hair types of no matter the texture or length. Curly hair, frizzy and textured hair particularly benefit from the prevention of the wrap. The silk fabric makes your hair look less frizzy and helps it avoid matting that can be difficult to get rid of. This stems from its sleek surface, which allows the hair to move with you and not pull while sleeping. Silk is also highly beneficial for natural, textured hair types. Silk can also help maintain frizz-free hairstyles for longer, especially benefiting both curly and textured hair.
It’s important to regularly wash your silk pillowcases and wraps as they collect bacteria like other fabrics.
