How to Cook Yellow Rice on a Stovetop

Total Time:35 minutes
Prep Time:10 minutes
Cooking Difficulty:Easy
Serving Amount
Ingredients
  • 2 cups jasmine rice

  • 2 tbsp. olive oil

  • 1 tbsp. garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp. salt, if desired

  • 1 tsp. ground turmeric

  • 2 bay leaves

  • 3 cups water or broth

Instructions
  • Step 1

Rinse the rice in a strainer or colander to remove excess starch. This helps the grains to cook evenly and remain separate. Hold the strainer under cool running water and stir the rice with your hand. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear. This may take several minutes.

  • Step 2

Add olive oil to a saucepan at medium high heat.

  • Step 3

After the oil has started to get hot, add your rinsed uncooked rice to the pan. Mix well to coat the rice. Stir continuously until the rice is lightly golden brown, about 4 minutes.

  • Step 4

For yellow rice, add turmeric, minced garlic, bay leaves and salt. Add in additional spices or seasonings such as onion powder and pepper if desired. Stir the mixture to combine.

  • Step 5

Use a 2:3 ratio of cups of rice to cups of water or broth. Most yellow rice recipes use chicken broth, but veggie stock or water can also be used. Add liquid to the pan and increase the heat to medium-high.

  • Step 6

Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally. Then, reduce the heat to medium-low and leave it to sit covered for 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Step 7

After about 20 minutes, check to see if the liquid has absorbed. The rice should be a vibrant yellow color. Fluff with a fork before serving.

Cooking time varies depending on the rice cooker model and the quantity of rice being cooked. On average, it takes around 20 to 25 minutes for yellow rice to cook in a rice cooker.

  • Step 4
