How to Cook Rice in a Slow Cooker

A Healthier Michigan

| 1 min read

Cooking rice in a slow cooker offers a new level of convenience for people who traditionally cook it on the stove top. While you have to monitor rice on the stovetop, the slow cooker allows you to set the time and walk away until it's ready. Slow cookers are easy to use and energy efficient.

How To Cook Rice in a Slow Cooker

Total Time:

3 hours

Prep Time:

10 minutes

Cooking Difficulty:

Easy

Serving Amount
Ingredients
  • 1 cup rice

  • 3 cups water

  • oil or butter, if desired

  • salt, if desired

Instructions
  • Step 1

Rinse the rice with a strainer or colander to remove excess starch. This way, the grains cook evenly and remain separate. Hold the strainer under cold running water and stir the rice with your hand. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear. This may take several minutes.

  • Step 2

Coat the inside of your slow cooker with about a tablespoon of butter or olive oil. This makes the rice less likely to stick. This can be skipped if the slow cooker is non-stick or if you do not want to use oil or butter.

  • Step 3

Once you’ve finished washing your rice, add it into the bottom of your slow cooker. Distribute the rice with a spoon or the tips of your fingers to make sure it’s spread evenly over the cooking surface.

  • Step 4

Use a 3:1 ratio of cups of water to cups of rice. Preheat the water by boiling it on the stovetop in a pot or kettle. While optional, this will start cooking the rice right away so that the rice is less likely to burn or turn overly soft. Add salt according to personal preference and health needs.

  • Step 5

Set your timer on the slow cooker for 2 hours and leave the lid on until the rice has absorbed all the water. After 2 hours, check to see if it needs an additional 30 minutes to an hour. When the rice is done, it should appear plump and no longer glistens with moisture.

  • Step 6

After the rice is complete, use a fork to fluff and mix the rice and serve as desired.

How to Store Leftover Rice

Allow the rice to cool down to room temperature before storing it. Then, transfer the rice to an airtight container. Place the container in the refrigerator immediately after storing the rice. Use the leftover rice within three to five days.
Optionally, you can freeze the rice in an airtight container or bag for up to three months. Press the bag to remove as much air from the bag as possible before sealing to prevent freezer burn.
