Ann Arbor has a lot to offer. This bustling university town is a culinary hotspot and tech hub with a walkable downtown. Even during the summer when the campus is relatively quiet, there’s always something going on in downtown Ann Arbor, from street fairs to interactive exhibits. Here are five things to experience during your summer getaway to this high-profile Michigan city.
Ann Arbor Art Fair: This Midwest tradition draws close to half a million attendees for the three-day event, which will take place this year July 20-22. Featuring nearly 1,000 artists, the Ann Arbor Street Fair spans 30 blocks in downtown.
University of Michigan: This public research university is the largest and oldest higher education institution in the state. It was founded in 1817, two decades before the territory of Michigan became a state. Today, more than 32,000 undergraduate students and 16,000 graduate students attend U-M.
Hands-on Museum: This museum specializes in interactive exhibits with the goal of helping both children and adults discover the scientist within them by promoting science literacy through experimentation, exploration, and education.
Matthaei Botanical Gardens: Part of the University of Michigan, these outdoor garden spaces feature bonsai, native plants, perennials, and a garden created just for kids. There are nearly 3 miles of trails and an indoor conservatory filled with plants from around the world.
Huron River Water Trail: This 104-mile inland paddling trail flows through Ann Arbor and other cities. On a sunny day, you’ll find people in kayaks, on paddleboards, or floating on tubes down this section of the Huron River Water Trail.
