How do you cure your spring fever?

According to the calendar, it’s spring today. I wish. The reality is its still snowy, 30 degrees and winter in Michigan. If I am being honest, I am totally over winter. I know I should expect it living where I live, but every year at the same time, I get a major case of spring fever.
Although spring fever is not a medical diagnosis, and you can’t get a prescription to cure it, there is a correlation between the changes of the season and our moods. After the gloomy, dark days of winter, most of us are ready for the longer, brighter, warmer days of spring. As the days get longer, melatonin starts to decrease and people become more energized.
Some researchers also believe that smell, sight, and hearing also play a role in our moods. The sweet smell of blooming flowers, fresh grass and the winds of spring can trigger emotional responses. Having these senses triggered can make people feel unusually energetic.
So, how do you curb your spring fever while you patiently wait for the warmer temperatures to finally arrive? Here are a few ways that I prepare.
- Clean/organize: I take this time to make a schedule of spring cleaning/organizing. I pick a few things that I can do now. For instance, this weekend I get to wipe down all the baseboards in the house and deep clean my refrigerator. Fun, right? Not really, but I use up a lot of energy that I am feeling and I feel very accomplished when I can cross that off the list.
- Outdoor planning: If you are planning any projects this spring, go to the hardware store and price things out. Then come home and plan it out. It always helps me if I have a home improvement project to look forward to when the weather gets warm.
- Take a trip: If you feel the weather really has you in a funk, plan a weekend getaway. Changing the scenery helps your mood and having new activities/things to do for a weekend can boost your energy.
