Swimming is a great exercise to practice when living a healthy lifestyle. You can get all the benefits of an aerobic workout without the strain on joints and it improves strength and flexibility.
However, drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, with the highest rates among children. Spending time in the water is fun for everyone, but knowing how to swim and the safety precautions that go with it are very important.
To help address this, USA Swimming has partnered with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority to create the program Swim 1922. The purpose of Swim 1922’s Family Fun Swim Day event is to help engage the African American community with swimming and water safety.
The project hopes to help increase the number of people of color who get in the water. Teaching children at a young age to swim and information about water safety can help reduce the prevalence of avoidable drowning, while increasing engagement of African Americans in a sport where they are underrepresented.
On Saturday, July 15, 2017, the group will host a free family fun swim day including former swimming champions of color from USA Swim. It will also offer both water-based and dry clinics that touch on many water-related topics, including water safety, opportunities in the sport of swimming, hair care, fitness and pool side fashion. There will also be many chances to win giveaways for those in attendance.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is a proud sponsor of the Swim 1922 family
