How to cook split peas on the stovetop
Serving Amount
Ingredients
3 cups water or broth
1 cup split peas
salt, if desired
Instructions
Step 1
Start by rinsing split peas under cold water with a fine mesh strainer or colander to remove any dirt or debris.
Step 2
Place the rinsed split peas in a large saucepan and use a 3:1 ratio of cups of water or broth to cups of split peas. You can also cook split peas directly into a soup or stew. Add salt or other seasonings according to personal preference and health needs.
Step 3
Bring pot to a boil over high heat.
Step 4
Once the mixture is boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Cook for 20 to 30 minutes or until the spilt peas are tender. Stir them occasionally to prevent sticking. Cooked split peas should have a creamy texture at the final taste test.
Step 5
Once the split peas reach the desired tenderness, remove them from the heat and drain any excess liquid if needed. If you are seeking a mushy texture, cook slightly longer and mash accordingly.
