How to Fold a Burrito

Packed with fillings like rice, beans, meat, vegetables and sauces, a burrito is a complete meal wrapped in a soft tortilla. But if you’ve ever tried to make one yourself, you may have run into a common problem — everything falls out when you try to roll it.
The secret to a great burrito isn’t just the ingredients - it’s the folding technique. When wrapped correctly, a burrito holds together neatly, keeps the fillings inside and is easy to eat without making a mess.

Start with the right tortilla
The tortilla is the foundation of your burrito, so choosing the right one helps a lot.
Look for a large flour tortilla, usually about 10 to 12 inches in diameter. This gives you enough space to hold all your fillings and still fold it securely.
Before adding ingredients, it’s helpful to warm the tortilla for about 10 to 20 seconds in the microwave or on a pan. A warm tortilla is softer and less likely to tear.

Don’t overfill the burrito
One of the most common mistakes is adding too many fillings.
To keep your burrito easy to wrap:
- Place fillings in the center of the tortilla
- Leave 2 to 3 inches of space around the edges
- Aim for a compact pile rather than spreading ingredients everywhere
A good burrito should be full but not overflowing.
Layer the ingredients properly
The way you arrange your fillings can make folding easier. A common order is:
- Rice or grains on the bottom
- Beans or protein
- Vegetables
- Cheese
- Sauces or toppings on top

Keeping everything centered helps prevent ingredients from escaping while rolling.
Step-by-step burrito folding method
Once your fillings are ready, it’s time to fold.

1. Fold the bottom up
Take the bottom edge of the tortilla (the side closest to you) and fold it up over the fillings. Gently tuck it underneath the ingredients to keep everything tight.
2. Fold in the sides
Next, fold the left and right sides of the tortilla inward toward the center. This step creates walls that keep the fillings from spilling out the ends.
3. Roll the burrito forward
Holding the sides in place, roll the burrito forward away from you. Keep it snug as you roll so the burrito stays compact. Continue rolling until the tortilla is completely wrapped around the fillings.
Optional: seal the burrito
For extra structure and flavor, you can lightly toast the burrito after folding.
Place it seam-side down in a hot skillet for 1 to 2 minutes. This helps seal the tortilla and gives the outside a slight crisp texture.
