Taking the First Steps Toward Triathlon Training

It’s the best of three worlds: running, swimming and biking. The three form what is known as a triathlon and are the perfect exercise combination for getting a rigorous workout.
Triathlons can be intimidating. Engaging in the three exercises back-to-back-to-back sounds exhausting on its own. So how do you get started on your fitness journey to a full triathlon?
- Get cleared. Check with your doctor to address any health concerns that may be affected by triathlon training. It’s important to know what you may be at risk for before starting an intense workout regimen.
- Eat appropriately. Triathlon training burns some serious calories. Make sure you are eating enough for your body to sustain itself while expelling so much energy. You should also eat foods high in protein to help your body recover from training.
- Start training. For someone who is physically active and fit, a 12-week training program would be sufficient. For those who are less active, a 16-week or longer training program should be implemented. Your training should consist of doing each of the physical activities involved in triathlons: running, swimming and biking. It’s also important to do back-to-back training activities. For example, go for a run and then a bike ride or go for a swim and then a run. You should also increase your distance gradually.
- Supplement your training. In addition to running, swimming and biking, you should also exercise to increase muscle strength and endurance. Triathlons require every muscle in the body due to the various workouts so having a diverse mix of exercises in training is crucial for conditioning your body.
- Take a breather. Taking time to rest while you train is also important. Rest is a critical part of training because your body needs time to recuperate from the physical strain placed on it during training.
On your mark…get set…go!
