7 Michigan Distilleries to Lift Your Spirits

Everyone knows Michiganders love their local beer, but the Mitten state is also home to lots of locally distilled spirits. Craft distilleries are the latest way to raise a toast to your community.
First, here’s a little refresher: A distillery is a place where liquor (most commonly gin, vodka, whiskey, bourbon or rum) is manufactured. There are dozens of major distilleries across the U.S., but smaller, specialty ones are popping up all over Michigan.
Local distilleries are known for creating delicious specialty crafted spirits, but they also offer a great spot for gatherings, live music, food expos and other fun events. Here are seven local distilleries across the Great Lakes State and a few of the unique offerings they provide:
- Coppercraft Distillery: Located in Holland, this place creates everything from gin, rum and vodka to several varieties of whiskey. They also regularly update their events calendar to reflect distillery tours, local highlights like Tulip Time and other fun happenings in the city.
- Grand Traverse Distillery: Though this distillery is based out of Traverse City, it has tasting rooms and retail locations throughout Michigan.
- Detroit City Distillery: DCD is located in Detroit’s historic Eastern Market and has a speakeasy vibe that takes you back to the roaring 20s. The tasting room is designed with cocktail connoisseurs in mind and hosts pop-up events that spotlight local restaurateurs and chefs.
- Round Barn Distillery: A branch of the Round Barn Winery and Brewery, Round Barn Distillery adds spirited flavor to Southwest Michigan’s beloved locale. Check out the Round Barn family of brands for tasty drinks, a tour around the estate or a stop at the Round Barn Grille for dinner with the family.
- Red Cedar Spirits: If you’re in the Lansing area visiting Michigan State University or the capital, Red Cedar Spirits is a fun stop. They make vodka, gin, whiskey, bourbon and brandy all in-house and you can enjoy samples of their spirits on a distillery tour.
- Journeyman Distillery: A staple among Michigan whiskey fans, Journeyman is a well-known distillery in Three Oaks. Nine different varieties of whiskey, as well as specialty items like the Humdinger Jalapeño Spirit and Snaggle Tooth Coffee Liqueur set this place apart. Frequently scheduled musical acts and their full menu of sandwiches and finger food make a fun time for all.
- Two James Spirits: Two James is another Detroit favorite. Their “wild west” motif and unique blends like the Absinthe du Nain Rouge and Apple Brandy draw in adventurous tasters. Be sure to also check out their running calendar for mixology spotlights and other fun gatherings.
