If you’ve ever been to summer camp as a kid, you probably left with memories you’ll never forget, new friendships, and experiences that helped you grow up.
Summer camp can help children learn the importance of teamwork, build relationships, and spend their time being physically active.
Michigan summer camps can be a great way to get kids up and moving. Running, hiking, canoeing, climbing and swimming are just some of the activities offered at summer camps across the state. There’s plenty of action and adventure children can join in on this summer.
Here’s a list of six popular Michigan summer camps for kids:
Camp O’Malley: Camp O’Malley in Grand Rapids provides a unique camp experience. Through its sponsorship with the Girls and Boys Clubs of Grand Rapids, Camp O’Malley is able to offer engaging team-building activities such as arts and crafts and a high ropes course. The camp also offers young people access to activities focused on teaching kids healthy lifestyles – like eating more fruits and vegetables while being active outdoors. This traditional camp experience is offered to children ages six to 17.
YMCA Camp Copneconic: At Camp Copneconic kids can check into the wilderness and prepare for an adventure in Fenton. Choose from a day camp and an overnight camp. Different camp themes are offered weekly such as Camp Move it, where campers learn valuable lessons about nutritious meals and physical fitness. This program is not only filled with fun, but flexible to attendees’ needs. Camp activities such as games, crafts, outdoor recreation and evening programs are customizable to individual camping groups.
Camp Lookout: Children have the opportunity to get involved in all kinds of outdoor fun at Camp Lookout in Frankfort. Camp Lookout is small enough for kids to get to know all camp members, yet large enough to offer diversified programs for all interest areas. At Camp Lookout, kids have the option to choose which activities they want to do each day, so each day is catered toward their own interests.
Camp Daggett: Camp Daggett in Petoskey offers kids the perfect place to enjoy nature’s beauty. This camp is nestled on more than 1,400 feet of lake frontage on beautiful Walloon Lake, with 118 acres of forests for campers to use. The outdoor environment helps campers develop useful skills in fun ways. For example, kids build problem-solving skills on the camp’s well-known high ropes course that spans throughout the forest.
Camp Newago: Camp Newaygo is a historic all-girls residential camp for campers ages seven to 17. The camp is located along Pickerel Lake in the Manistee National Forest region of Newaygo. Girls can sign up for an experience in the great outdoors, be physically active and develop lifelong friendships with their fellow campers.
Greenwoods Camp for Boys: Campers ages seven to 17 are welcome to attend Greenwoods camp located in Decatur. Greenwoods offers a spectacular location to send boys to explore their interests and attracts boys from all over the world. Together, campers develop valuable skills such as leadership, responsibility, team work and confidence that will remain with them from childhood into their adult lives.
