MI Big Green Gym: Bandemer Park

I found Bandemer Park by accident several years ago when I had time to kill between appointments in Ann Arbor. I was surprised to find a calm tract of green that runs underneath M-14 along the Huron River. I walked some of the trails that day and I make it a point to visit the park whenever I’m in the area because it is close enough to the beaten path to be easily accessible but far enough away that the bustle of the city quickly fades away.
Bandemer Park has something for everyone. It is a part of Washtenaw County’s Border-to-Border Trail, so there are plenty of good hiking and biking trails. Disc golf fans will find a tight, nine-hole course nestled in the park’s wooded area. Bird lovers will enjoy the quiet wooded openings along the river where ducks seem to always congregate. Dirt bike enthusiasts have a place to play too. And if you are interested in rowing or sculling, the Ann Arbor Rowing Club is based on the south end of the park.
I walk at least four days a week for an hour at a time and my walking companion is my dog Barney. Since my wife and I adopted him from the Michigan Humane Society, I’ve lost 15 pounds and two inches off my waistline. More importantly to me, I wake up with a lot less pain in my joints, which I know is due in part to being at a healthier weight. Because National Pet Month is around the corner, I decided to take Barney with me on my picture taking adventure around Bandemer Park, which happens to be pet friendly. Here are a few photos from our walk last week.
