It’s a well-known fact that no one enjoys extra paperwork. Add in the stress of an accident or illness and filing an insurance claim is likely the last thing you want to worry about. Typically your health care provider will file the claim for you; however, in some instances you’ll need to file the claim yourself. But don’t worry; we’ll walk you through these steps:
- Get your claim form: To file an insurance claim you’ll need to obtain the form from your insurance company. The good news is completing the form is relatively self-explanatory and requires only basic information, like your insurance information and a brief explanation of the reason for your visit.
- Get a hold of itemized receipts: Ask your doctor to provide an itemized bill of the services they provided. You’ll need to attach this to your insurance claim so make sure it includes all the details, including costs associated with each service.
- Make copies: I can’t stress this enough – make a copy of every item submitted with your claim. This will help eliminate errors and make things easier for you in the future. While it’s uncommon, insurance claims do get lost, and the last thing you’ll want to do is re-file your claim and go through the entire process all over again.
- File your claim: Once you’ve completed the above steps you can file your claim! Consider calling your insurance company to double-check you have all the correct forms and the right mailing address before you send it out. While on the phone, ask how long the process should take and mark it down on your calendar so you can follow-up if you haven’t heard back by that date.
